Remembering John Poulos, 40 Years Later

It’s hard to fathom that it’s been 40 years since The Buckinghams’ leader, drummer John Poulos, passed away at the too-young age of 32. Travel back in time for a few minutes as we remember John through the eyes and memories of his bandmate and friend, Carl Giammarese. First, Carl's video message, especially for friends and fans of The Buckinghams, who’d journeyed with them from their earliest days. John’s legacy of love lives on, and his many gifts and talents are remembered by those who loved him dearly, especially his widow, Dale Fahey, and their daughter, Polly, a talented creative in her own right. And now, flashback to the very beginning. From the band photo (above) the year was 1965 and The Pulsations won a battle of the bands in Chicago, chosen to perform on Chicago’s WGN-TV for 13 weeks on the show, “All Time Hits.” Band members on the show by the 4th week were: [L to R]: Nick Fortuna, Dennis Miccolis, John Poulos (seated), Dennis Tufano, and Carl Giammarese (seated)].

Blast from the Past--Get with the Go Group, See Mr. Norm, Jingle by The Buckinghams, featured in Kent Kotal's Forgotten Hits

Thanks to WLSClark and Kent Kotal, here is the cover art that goes with The Buckinghams’ jingle for Norm Kraus, also known as Mr. Norm. Carl Bonafede, original manager of The Buckinghams, booked them often at Mr. Norm’s Sport Club for Grand Spaulding Dodge. Mr. Norm gave the band a van in exchange for this jingle that was played across Chicago radio stations. The LP pictured is full of drag strip stuff at Ubly Dragway. The Buckinghams jingle is 20 seconds that show up on the end and beginning of the LP side which runs a full 13 minutes of drag stuff similar to the Capitol Records series of Lps. Note it sold for $1 then. Now, it would bring $100 probably. WLSClark “Get With the Go Group!” by The Buckinghams

The Buckinghams Included in Paul Shaffer's Book

In the noted "Swingin' Showbiz Saga," by David Letterman's sidekick and leader of the CBS Orchestra, Paul Shaffer, music of The Buckinghams is mentioned twice in "We'll Be Here for the Rest of Our Lives." The 2009 book is published by Flying Dolphin Press and is coauthored by Paul Shaffer and David Ritz. Page 67 notes that after high school graduation, Paul Shaffer listened to WLS radio in Chicago all the way from his hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. In Chapter 26, "Divided Soul," Shaffer speaks of his dilemma in having been asked to be musical director for the upcoming Blues Brothers movie, but the overlapping request from Gilda Radner to write songs with her and coproduce her album on a record deal she'd just been signed to develop. Shaffer's work on The Blues Brothers Movie project was substantial enough to the point where, in Shaffer's own words (pp. 185-186) "As the script started shaping up, it became clear that

Blast from the Past--Don't You Care by The Buckinghams in Wheeling, and YouTube contributors, Jacksdistrict, and MMiiKKee95

Singing their first hit on Columbia Records, Carl Giammarese and The Buckinghams perform "Don't You Care," at the Wheeling Freedomfest in July 2007. Thanks to videographer smctopia for posting this footage: and, in another 2007 YouTube video, user jacksdistrict does a nice job on the song as well. Timeless music is just that...and holds up well as part of the soundtrack of our lives. and, if you don't play the guitar, you can still play the radio. Here's user MMiiKKee95 playing the ...stereo with "Don't You Care".

Jubilee2's Tribute to Carl Giammarese, Nick Fortuna, Tom Scheckel, Bob Abrams, and Bruce Soboroff

Sheryl, aka Jubilee2 on YouTube, assembled a nice video tribute to The Buckinghams with the background of the 1960s classic, "Hey Baby, They're Playing Our Song". In over a year, the video has had 25,000 views. The Buckinghams were named "The Most Listened to Band in America" in 1967 by Billboard Magazine . These pictures can be found on The Buckinghams' official web site, www.thebuckinghams.com and the original video on YouTube can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKv1nw_5A6Q
