Spehar books musical acts for the Cannery, the Eastside Cannery and the Rampart. And, sometimes, her younger staff doesn't quite get it when she books an act from the '50s or '60s. "The younger generation that works here with me is always yelling at me because I don't book the hard rock they like," Spehar explains with a laugh. But, laugh-worthy or not, booking oldies acts -- along with classic rock and tribute acts -- has allowed Cannery venues to carve out a boomer-friendly niche in a competitive Las Vegas entertainment landscape. Nostalgia tops evening entertainment at Taste August 4, 2009 By KENNETH L R. PATCHEN Correspondent American English and The Buckinghams are the featured night-time entertainers at this year's late-August Taste of Highland Park during the Port Clinton Art Festival. The 16 participating restaurants include four newcomers this summer: Abigail's, Fuddruckers, Norton's, and Sushi Kushi Too. In addition, the Taste of Highland dining area has been expanded to better accommodate everyone. In many ways, this Taste is the same time, same place, and same set-up of specialty food-serving stations as last year's event. Families can eat during the art fair and entertainment will be on the stage at Central Avenue and Second Street. The Britins opened the evening in full Beatles costume attire and hair-cut, followed by Herman's Hermits starring Barry Whitwam, and evening headliners, The Buckinghams, Chicago natives with the name that sounded British. The Union Jack up on stage was reminiscent of when the producers of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour thought The Bucks were British and had that as decoration when the band performed on their show. At least in Oshkosh, everyone was British for the evening.

CHARLES – Fair officials attributed good weather and bargain entertainment to this year’s record crowds at the Kane County Fair. The fair, which ran from Wednesday to Sunday, attracted 151,975 people, up from 130,000 people last year. “We didn’t have any big storms for the week,” said Floyd Brown, advertising and promotions director for the fair. “The showers we had were short-lived.” The music arena also enjoyed overflow crowds because of bands like American English and The Buckinghams, Brown said. All the thrill shows played to full houses, Brown said, such as Saturday’s rodeo and Sunday’s demolition derby. A record 36,230 people attended opening day, where fair-goers were admitted for the discounted fee of $1. Regular admission to the fair was $5. “Because of the down economy, people are looking for bargains,” Brown said. “A family could control their costs

The annual fair will run from today through Sunday at the fairgrounds on Randall Road in St. Charles between Routes 64 and 38. The fair will sport a new look this year with the addition of a new air-conditioned 50,000-square-foot exhibit hall, blacktopping of the entertainment and eating areas, new drainage throughout the grounds and new facilities for equestrian competition and horse care. More than 130,000 people attended the Kane County Fair last year. Admission to the fair is $5 for those ages 5 and older, and parking is free. On opening day, admission is $1, with seniors 62 and older admitted free. The fair will feature a few new attractions this year, including the national champion FMX Extreme Sports motorcycle riders, which will do back flips at 70 feet in the air. They will perform at 8 p.m. today as part of the fair’s nightly thrill show
